  • RAW FEEDING GUIDE | HAPPY PAWS RAW | HARLOW ESSEX

Raw dog and cat food supplier based in Harlow Essex offering convenient, pick up or local delivery. We also have a range natural dog treats and supplements. GUIDE TO RAW FEEDING What are the health benefits in feeding your dog a raw diet? It’s undeniable that a raw meat, organ and bone focused diet is the most natural and biologically appropriate diet for dogs. Raw feeding will nurture and fuel your dog’s well-being by providing: Cleaner teeth, healthy gums and fresher breath Smaller, firmer stools that are less smelly Improved digestion Reduction in irritations and allergies Strong bones and supple joints Muscular support and development Improved mobility Boosted immune system Better weight control Shinier coat and healthier skin Increased energy and stamina Increased energy, stamina and vitality Improved focus and cognitive ability Mental stimulation Balanced temperament Engaged, curious and stimulated by what’s in their raw bowl Improved liver, pancreatic and bowel health Fewer veterinary appointments – resulting in financial savings TRANSITIONING TO RAW Transitioning to raw feeding is straightforward. We recommend that the best way to change from your dog's existing diet to raw feeding is to go completely 'cold turkey' by doing a straight swap. The reason we don't advise mixing raw with anything else (such as kibble or tinned food) is to prevent digestive upsets. Naturally acidic (pH level 2), a dog's stomach is biologically suited to a raw diet as a highly acidic stomach easily breaks down and digests bone. To start, feed the last meal of your dog's current diet in the evening, then start afresh with raw food the following morning. Follow your dog's established feeding routine as before. During the transition process your dog may need time to adjust as they will be going through a detoxification process. Monitor your dog’s overall well-being and their stools during this process and ensure fresh water is readily available. HOW MUCH DO I FEED? Adult (over one year old): Aim to feed a guideline of 2-3% of your dog’s current bodyweight per day. This amount may be fed once a day, or halved and divided up between two meals to achieve your dog’s set grams per day. For example: a dog weighing 30KG should be eating between 600-900grams per day. If fed twice a day each meal would be 300-450grams per meal. Each and every dog is unique, and their diet should be tailored according to their individual needs. Raw feeding is easy to adjust as you can add or takeaway the guideline amount of their feed according to your dog’s specific requirements. When identifying the feeding quantities consider the amount of daily exercise and activity your dog exerts. A working dog being active for the majority of the day, would burn much more energy compared to a dog that is a pet, and therefore would require a higher percentage feed. Other factors like age, breed, as well as external factors such as seasonal temperatures and other variables should be considered. Be mindful of the type of protein you are feeding when it comes to per day feeding percentages, as different proteins have varying fat content. For example, turkey is a leaner meat compared to a rich beef mince. If you want your dog to lose or gain weight then feed 2-3% of their target bodyweight per day. By increasing or reducing food quantity you can manage your dog’s weight according to their needs at the time. Puppies (under one year old): Raw feeding your puppy will provide them with all the nutrients they require to flourish and thrive. We recommend you raw feed on the basis of the bodyweight of your puppy at specific age milestones, as follows: 2-4 months: feed 10%-8% of their bodyweight per day 4-6 months: feed 8%-6% of their bodyweight per day (by 4 months of age commence feeding your puppy from three times a day to two) 6-8 months: feed 6%-4% of their bodyweight per day 8-12 months: feed 4%-3% of their bodyweight per day It’s important to note how your puppy is responding and adjust accordingly. Like adult dogs, treat the raw feeding of your puppy on their individual dietary, digestive and activity needs and requirements. WHAT DO I FEED? To feed a balanced raw diet we suggest following the 80/10/10 approach – this means feeding a mix of 80% muscle meat, 10% bone and 10% offal / organ meat (5% liver with 5% other offal). You can approach raw feeding by: DIY: whereby you chop and weigh chunks of meat, meaty bones and offal at the required percentage. 80/10/10 Complete Minces or Dinners: pre-prepared minces containing a variety of either single or mixed proteins made with 80% meat, 10% ground bone and 10% organ meat. You can also add nutritional supplements containing fish oil, dried vegetables, fruit, herbals and nuts for added benefits 80/20 Complete Minces: pre-prepared minces containing 80% meat, organ meat and bone with 20% vegetables, fruit and supplements A combination of the above, with the focus on achieving a balanced nutrition over time by feeding quality meaty chunks, meaty bone and offal / organ meat according to the needs of your dog. Whatever your approach to raw feeding, it’s important that the approach works best for both you and your dog. For ease of transition, we suggest using convenient, already prepared 80/10/10 or 80/20 complete minces and 80/10/10 dinners. Pre-prepared completes ensures that your dog is getting a balanced diet, and gives you the chance to adapt to the new way of feeding without the worry. TRANSITION PERIOD During the transition period feed one type of protein (type of meat) a week for each meal for the first 5 weeks. This approach helps your dog get used to different types of meat and also gives you a chance to identify and eliminate any potential allergies. After the 5-week transition period the best way to give your dog all they need is variety – at least five different proteins on rotation a week, but if you can do more, that is even better! Variety is vital to a raw fed dog, as constantly feeding only one type of protein can lead to your dog becoming uninterested in their food and potentially may cause allergies. Additionally: Introduce raw frozen fish such as sprats, mackerel or sardines, and feed no more than twice a week. Include raw organic eggs with shell once or twice a week If you decide to include vegetables, it is recommended to slightly steam them then blend into a pulp so as to break down the cellulose wall. Feed vegetables on top of your dog’s specific meal allowance so it doesn’t dilute down the 80/10/10. If possible, always feed organic vegetables as these will not contain pesticides which can be very harmful especially if the veggies are fed raw as treats. Vegetables such as spinach, kale, squash and pumpkin are nutritionally beneficial; however, avoid onion, corn on the cob and raw potato. For convenience and those who a time sensitive, you can purchase nutritional supplements containing human grade vegetables, fruits, herbs, nuts and seeds to mix in with raw minces . TRANSITION PLAN During the first five weeks feed one protein a week. For ease of digestion, start your dog on a bland meat. During the first week add green tripe (beef or lamb tripe) to the protein as this helps dilute the bone, and helps the pH balance of the stomach to adjust with the bone effectively. Following this, introduce one new protein each week until your dog has had 5 different types of protein. A recommended guidance is: During the first week feed a chicken or turkey complete (80/10/10) mixed 50/50 with beef or lamb tripe. Each week thereafter, add another meat complete (80/10/10) such as duck, beef, lamb or veal. Some proteins are available seasonally, therefore keep this in mind when introducing new proteins. Introduce fish and whole meaty bones appropriate to your dog’s size and chewing style – feed chicken or duck feet, chicken wing tips, turkey necks and other raw food options after week 5. OTHER THINGS TO NOTE... As all dogs have their own unique dietary requirements and needs the percentages are a guideline only. Content percentages are dependent on your dog’s metabolism, activity levels, amount of exercise, food preferences or intolerances and sensitivities. Some dogs may need a higher percentage of bone than others. Additions and alternations based on your dog’s requirements are easily adapted into their raw feeding. Your dog’s thirst and the drinking of water will reduce considerably; this is to be expected as there is a great amount of natural moisture in raw food. Stool frequency and size will reduce dramatically. Again, this is perfectly normal, as there are fewer waste products in the natural raw food for them to eliminate. During the night some dogs may wake and bring up yellow foamy bile known as ‘hunger pukes”. If this should occur then feed your dog a small treat last thing at night and this should resolve this. Suggested low fat night time treats. There is absolutely no need to starve your dog the following day as they are hungry. Not all vets prescribe to raw feeding, but most are fine if it is done correctly and your dog receives a nutritionally balanced diet. Start Now

  • PET SERVICES | HAPPY PAWS ESSEX | HARLOW ESSEX

Happy Paws a Professional Dog Walking & Pet Sitting Business. based in Harlow Essex and covering surrounding areas. established 2016. services include group walks, solo walks, puppy visits, cat visits & small animal visits. PET SERVICES Here are some details about the popular Pet Services we provide. If you're looking for a specific service that isn't listed, please feel free to call us or send an email with your requirements. ABOUT GROUP WALKS PUPPY/DOG VISITS CAT VISITS SOLO WALKS GROUP WALKS - £13 Group dog walks are made up of 2 or more carefully introduced dogs - they can be a great opportunity for your dog to use their social skills, develop friendships and be mentally stimulated which leads to a fulfilling walking experience. What is a Group Walk? Group dog walks are our most popular service! In these sessions, we bring together pooches from different homes in small, manageable groups where they can interact, play and explore. As a rule, we offer a small ratio of dogs to walkers, usually no more than around 4 dogs to one person. When we know that dogs are well matched and have met several times before, we may bring small groups together, but only when multiple dog carers are present so that every dog in our care gets equal attention and consideration. When introducing dogs to groups for the first time, we will usually buddy them up slowly with others that we know are calm and well socialised. If we feel they have managed the interaction well, we will slowly introduce them to the other dogs they will commonly meet. we will always let you know what has gone well, and what might need working on! Feedback to clients only ever comes from a place of love - we want every dog in our care to get the most out of their walks and sometimes a little additional training is needed to make that happen, Is my dog suited to Group Walks? We love sharing time with group walk dogs, however not every dog is suited to a Group Walking scenario. Because the relationships and interactions between dogs can be complex and need to be managed, we have some rules for dogs that can be walked as part of a group: 1 - Dogs must be up to date with vaccinations For the health and wellbeing of all the pets in our care, we ask clients to ensure that their pets are up to date with vaccines, or are titre tested regularly to ensure they have immunity. We also encourage clients to regularly use worm and flea treatments out of respect for the other dogs they are interacting with, this can be done naturally we can give advice of this if required. 2 - Dogs must be well socialised We don't expect every dog to be perfectly well behaved all the time - even humans can't manage that! But we do ask that clients honestly assess their own pet and ask themselves - is my dog going to get on well with unfamiliar faces? If your pet is nervous, anxious or has behavioural quirks that might mean they can't mix with other dogs, they might be better suited to solo walks instead. Please note that we reserve the absolute right to make the final decision on mixing animals from different households - we must always consider the safety and well being of the entire group and will remove dogs from group settings if needed. If your dog is not used to walking with other dogs, we can slowly introduce them in a way that makes them comfortable - this can take time but it can be done, so please be honest about your dog bed's personality and behaviours when making contact with us. It is really important to note that group walks are not a substitute for puppy classes or private socialisation training - if you want your dog to develop their socialisation skills, please ask us to refer you to a local trainer who will be best placed to assist you. Dogs who come to our sessions should already have good social skills and it will be very apparent immediately if they do not! 3 - Dogs must walk well on lead as well as off lead if allowed. There will always be times when group walk dogs must walk on lead even for off lead dogs - sometimes it is to cross a car park or sometimes for their own safety. When you have multiple dogs on lead, it is really important that they are comfortable walking alongside other dogs in close quarters and have good on lead etiquette. No dog's behaviour is perfect! But group walking dogs do need to have a solid base to work from. If you are concerned that your pet's lead walking behaviour might not be suited to group dog walking, have a chat with us and we can assess the situation further! 4 - Dogs should be comfortable being transported in vehicles We take an adaptable approach to transporting the dogs in our care - though in most cases group dogs are transported to location in suitably sized crates. This is for their own safety, as well as others - we have a strict policy of not mixing pets from different households in vehicles. This means we have to separate pets using crates or car guards - if your pet is not going to manage being transported while restrained in this way, they may not be suited to group walks. *Walks maybe shortened to protect your dogs health and welbeing, an example of this would be extreme heat or a bad storm where a dog becomes frightened or nervous. PUPPY/DOG VISITS - FROM £12 Our puppy & dog visits are suited to pets who for one reason or other are unable to use our walking services. Examples of why this might be are: Dogs who are too young or inexperienced in social settings Dogs who are unable to walk for long periods of time due to illness or disability Clients are only out for short periods of time and want feeding and company for their pet only There are of course many other reasons that a client may want a drop in visit only - please get in touch to discuss your needs! As standard, during these visits we let pets out for toilet breaks (depending on the age and ability of the dog we are able to incorporate a short walk into the visit if required), refresh water bowls, feed if required and provide some interaction through play. Getting a new puppy is always an exciting experience, but it does bring on a big responsibility. Puppies require a lot of time and attention from their new owner, but often commitments, such as work, get in the way. We can help by visiting your puppy during the day to feed them, let them out in the garden or simply give them some love and attention. If there are any specific activities that clients wish us to do with their pet during their visit, this can be discussed . If you are in a multi dog household, additional charges will apply - please message us for further details. *30 or 60 minute visits available. CAT VISITS (SITTING) - FROM £9 Our cat visit service means that rather than taking your cat to a cattery we visit your cat in their own home. This is perfect for cats as who in generally hate leaving their own territory, so cat a visit means they’re not disrupted and are much happier and relaxed on your return. We will go through your cat care regime and ensure we stick to their normal routine as closely as possible ensuring they have the right food and any special diet that may be difficult for catteries to provide, administer medication and can liaise with your own vet if necessary. At £9 (per day for up to 2 cats (single visit) or £17 (2 visits) For further information, please email or call us. We recommend one or two visits per day for cats, but we’ve found that most cats are very happy with a single visit unless medication requires additional attention. But for that extra bit of TLC we can make extra visits and are completely flexible to your requirements. If you feed your cats twice a day but don’t think they need two visits, then we are happy to set your food bowl timer for an evening feed all within the price. SOLO WALKS - FROM £12 These walks are a one-on-one service where your dog has the exclusive attention of their Carer. They are particularly suited to dogs who may for one reason or other, not be suited to walking a group situation. Solo walks are most suited to dogs who: Are anxious or nervous around other dogs Require extra attention around people or children Are strong pullers and do not walk well on leads Have poor recall skills Are too young for group walks or lack social experience Are reactive to one or multiple things Display obsessive or compulsive behaviours Don't like to walk very fast or very far Unneutered male or female dogs There is absolutely no judgement on owners whose dog needs to be walked solo - there are so many reasons why this might be and we will always discuss in detail what those are before taking on a client. Please note that we only offer solo walks outside of peak walking times to maintain our availability to our group walking clients. Please speak with us about availability options. Reactivity You may have heard the term 'reactive' when listening to descriptions of dogs with behavioural quirks. Reactivity is a vastly sliding scale of the way a dog presents behaviours when a stimulus is present. Reactive dogs could well present aggressively, but they may just as well present as nervous or flighty dogs. Some dogs are wonderfully social and well mannered off lead, but on lead snap and lunge at other dogs. There is no one rule for what a reactive dog reacts to, or how they will react. In nearly all cases, reactivity is borne out of a nervous or fear response so it is important for us to know our dogs individually and understand what makes them uncomfortable. This is why we offer only solo walks to dogs that have displayed reactive behaviours. It is VERY important that clients are open and honest about their pet's reactions so that we know what to expect and how best to handle it. Restrictions Although we are willing to work with reactive dogs with certain precautions in place (the use of muzzles for example), there are limitations on what we are able to do. We have a duty of care to the public when we are out with dogs so unfortunately for the safety of everyone, including our own team, we are unable to walk dogs who have shown aggressive behaviour towards humans, or who are known to have attacked other dogs. *30 or 60 minute walks available. SMALL ANIMAL VISITS - FROM £9 Small animal visits similar to Cat visits are usually booked for once per day but additional visits can be booked if required. During the visit we will complete any tasks asked of us from feeding and playing, to cleaning out and letting pets out for exercise (in the case of suitable & secure pens being present). Clients with multiple small animals or a mix of different small animals not housed together, will be charge a higher rate - in these cases please speak to us when looking for a quote and information. Please note that we will not allow pets to be left unsupervised in housing that is not secure or damaged. Please inspect any crates, pens or hutches before services commence. OTHER SERVICE We offer a range of services that can be tailored to your individual needs. Please contact us for information on other services and to discuss your requirements.
